Just imagine that for more days than you could remember your life had been planned by others. Who you talked to, where you went, when you ate, whether you cried and, even, who you married. This was what happened to twenty-two year-old, recently-betrothed Miss Onyx Hamilton.Major Jack Beresford had seen firsthand the horrors of war. As an Englishman, he had performed his duty while fighting in Spain against Napoleon. He witnessed atrocities that no one should ever see. The end result was that he had been tortured, wounded -with scars- and had a speech impediment: he stuttered. He dreaded sleep because his nightmares continued.
After four long years, he was finally returning home when he came upon Onyx and her companion, Alice. Their coach was crippled on the side of the road. In the process of being robbed and molested, he came to the ladies' rescue. Within a split second, he was shot and everything in Onyx's and Jack's fragile world would change.

"Onxy?"
She raised her head. Good God, the man's hearing was acute. And I was so quiet. She looked toward the closed door, sighed, and stood up.
Moonlight filled the little room and threw a wide band of brightness across the blanket that covered Major Beresford. His hands were resting on top of the blanket in that moonlit space and were the only part of him that she could see.
"Onyx?"
It wasn't so much a question this time, or even just her name. It was an entire sentence- subject, verb and direct object.

If you have never read a historical romance by Carla Kelly, I recommend you give this author a try. Her method of writing: her characters talk to themselves and she mixes first and third tenses may be a little off-putting but don't let that deter you from reading her books. Even her 'clunkers' are better than many other writers' best stories. Why? Because she writes about real, relatable people, dealing with genuine problems. Her characters play the hand they've been dealt: with dignity, humor and love.

Summer Campaign Signet Regency Romance Carla Kelly 9780451158369 Books Reviews
This story pulled me in from page one. It was so deeply "real" and passionate, the characters were so genuine and well drawn.
That's what I like about Ms. Kelly's writing. She explores distressing circumstances with great sensitivity and delves into her characters with the same thoughtful delicacy. She doesn't shy away from difficult themes and she displays the humanness of her characters during what are sometimes wrenching experiences. And yet, she writes these stories in such a way, so well, that I am never cast into the doldrums. There is always a sense of hope.
In this vein, I can also recommend THE WEDDING RING QUEST and THE ADMIRAL'S PENNILESS BRIDE. These were written with great understanding.
Enjoy your reading! )
This Carla Kelly book was so lighthearted and yet sad at the same time.
Many of Kelly's heroines have a background that makes them ineligible for marriage (such as unfortunate parents, no dowry, etc). In this story we have a young lady (Onyx) forced into a marriage with a ridiculous vicar (Andrew Littletree) due to the scandal surrounding her family and her unlucky financial situation. He is her only hope of marrying and getting out.
Until, on her way to her new home, she finds herself in trouble. Thankfully our fabulous Major Jack shows up to save the day, but becomes wounded as a result. Since he saved her, Onyx nurses him back to health. They both feel the pull of attraction, but her background makes it impossible to marry someone with Jack's wealth and family.
I truly enjoyed the characters in this sweet story - all of them! The secondary story of Jack's brother is sad, but I don't think it takes away from the book. I recommend this one!
Re-reading my favorite Carla Kelly books and writing reviews on those I missed the first time around.
In this book, we have yet another heroine, Onyx, who has less than desirable living circumstances. Onyx is a young woman currently living with a "family" but not really since none are related to her - those who loved her have passed including the vicar who raised her as his own daughter and her twin brother Gerald, who died as a result of his military service in the war against France. She's left with a stepmother and her stepmother's husband who treat her like trash. Into this dismal world, a suitor has entered in the person of the vicar, Andrew Littlewood.
In order to give you a really good picture of Reverend Littlewood, imagine if you will the vicar cousin (Mr. Collins) who came to visit the Bennett family in Pride and Prejudice, and then downsize him about 50% in your estimation and you'll get a real good picture of Littlewood as he is presented within the pages of this book. One last comment regarding Littlewood, which my family would say is totally unworthy of a respectable matronly grandma such as I am considered to be - nevertheless it follows I strongly suspect Andrew will live up to his last name within the confines of his marriage bed, if you get my drift, and I'm sure you do.
Moving on with my review. Deciding she has no other option, Onyx agrees to marry "Littlewood" and soon finds herself traveling to his home in order to get it ready for their marriage. He of course has higher things to occupy his mind such as a series of lectures at some religious gathering - who cares about the specifics? Certainly, not we the readers. On Onyx's journey she is accosted by highwaymen whereupon our good Major Jack Beresford, recently returned from the war and on his way home after four long years, comes to her rescue, is wounded, resulting in Onyx, her maid, Jack and one of the highwaymen (now very quickly reformed) having to move into a nearby farmer's home until Jack can recuperate.
Jack desperately needs to recuperate - not only from the gunshot wound, but from far deeper emotional wounds he's suffered during the war. Yes, this is yet another war story about the men who fought during the Napoleonic Wars who had some serious PTSD and Jack is one of the worst having been one of the lead officers who was responsible for sending men up the ladders at Badajoz. If you, the reader, aren't aware of what happened at Badajoz, check out the battle on Wikipedia - it will give you a tiny idea of what war is like - not only for the soldiers but also for the innocent victims who lived within the walls of a besieged town.
Before we can even think, Jack and Onyx have declared themselves to be husband and wife in order to assume enough propriety for the "Methodist" farmers to allow Jack to recuperate from the gunshot wound while he and Onyx live in their home. Carla Kelly has a fun sense of humor which is threaded throughout her books. In this story, we have Jack and Onyx making up a fake son, Ned, which they wind up having to kill off eventually when their story goes awry. This deception of being husband and wife works for and against Jack and Onyx, for they are falling into a pleasant camaraderie which very quickly heads toward a thing called love. However, due to Onyx's promise to marry Littlewood and the circumstances of her birth, she withholds her emotions to the best of her ability. Plus, there is the fact that Jack doesn't offer up some truths about his family and their place in society and once Onyx learns the truth, she feels very ill used.
We have some very sweet circumstances set up within the storyline. There's also a kinda hateful, brash, dragon of a person in Lady Bagshott who holds the living that Littlewood will fulfill. This contributes to some angst within the storyline as she vents her spleen on our lovely Onyx. Jack does everything he can to help Onyx, but once he's recuperated, he must journey on toward his family estate where he comes against some very difficult truths back home with his family even while Onyx and her maid run into hindrances in their efforts to get her future home ready - mostly due to Lady Bagshott. Very soon, Jack reaches out to Onyx with a cry for help in attending his seriously ill older brother. Of course Onyx comes running. Again, a lovely romance between two individuals from very different worlds who fall in love and must needs find their way past all the perceived barriers to their Happily Ever After. Of course we could fix it very quickly, but then there would be no story.
Great book with a very common theme of Carly Kelly's - that of soldiers returning from the war with resulting nightmarish memories whose lives will never be the same. Yet, their lives may wind up being better than ever, once healing takes place and their mind has time to adjust to what was/is truly important in life. Such is Jack's situation. He realizes how little the circumstances of birth matter when one considers everything else in life. He only wants Onyx. Now, he must pray that she will see the light.
Just imagine that for more days than you could remember your life had been planned by others. Who you talked to, where you went, when you ate, whether you cried and, even, who you married. This was what happened to twenty-two year-old, recently-betrothed Miss Onyx Hamilton.
