Strange and Ever After Something Strange and Deadly Trilogy Susan Dennard Books

Overall, I loved this series. Dennard's characters are compelling, the plot relentless, the moral quandaries interesting, the debates over them push the story forward instead of bogging it down.

The ending is undoubtedly bittersweet, but satisfying in the sense that yes, I am ready to say goodbye to these characters and move on to what's next. You know how some books keep you in their world after you're done and make it impossible to pick up the next book for a few days? This one doesn't do that, but oddly I'm not at all disappointed about that. Everything feels wrapped up, bittersweet, but with closure.

I'm looking forward to reading more from this author.

Strange and Ever After Something Strange and Deadly Trilogy Susan Dennard Books Reviews

If I could give this book more than 5 stars, I would. This final installment in the Something Strange and Deadly Series is absolutely phenomenal. Ms. Dennard's writing utterly blew me away. I always had thought that she was an amazing author. She captivated me from the very beginning chapter in Something Strange and Deadly. However, this book truly shows how much she has grown as an author over the course of the several years since the first book was published. Every word, every sentence, every descriptions comes alive in front of you, and you truly feel every single emotion of Eleanor. It takes a gifted author to be able to do this, and it's very rare that author's can make you feel so deeply about their characters, but this book proves that it can be done. After all, not many authors can expertly navigate the steampunk world, while mixing it with both zombies and Egyptian mythology, and have it turn out to be a masterpiece! Throughout reading this novel, you can easily tell that these characters are close to Ms. Dennard's heart, and that she wanted to give them- and us- the best story possible.

Eleanor has always been one of my favorite characters. She has grown so much over the course of this series, and this growth is front and center in this novel. Eleanor is still plagued by her growing need to use magic, no matter the cost. This fuels her overwhelming desire to finally get revenge on Marcus. After all, he's completely destroyed her life, so why shouldn't she destroy his. However, with all this new power, Eleanor begins to lose herself. While we saw the beginnings of this in A Darkness Strange and Lovely, it is extremely apparent just how far she has gone in this book. Does Eleanor let her hatred for Marcus and her hunger for magic overcome her? Well, you'll have to read the book to find out. But, what I will tell you is that Eleanor is confronted with this question, and she makes a decision that effects everyone and everything around her. One thing that I always loved about Eleanor's character though is how relatable and realistic she is. I felt that Ms. Dennard wrote her character in a way that reflects how anyone would react given the situation. When given new powers, ones that can be extremely beneficial in situations, who wouldn't want to take advantage of it? Who wouldn't want to explore all the possibilities that the magic has to offer?

All of our other favorite characters are back, but not all for the better. Jie is absent for a brief time, but she returns quickly to the story. However, she isn't the same as when she left. Daniel finally confronts Eleanor on his feelings for her and her magic. And Joseph is just trying to keep the peace in a way. While he wants revenge on Marcus more so than anyone else, he realizes that Eleanor needs help. However, she doesn't exactly want anyone's help. Nevertheless, the members of the Spirit Hunters complement each other. They all care and fight for each other, some until their last breath.

This novel will sweep you off your feet, and you will never want the story to end. The plot is packed with twists and turns, love and betrayals, and sadly...death. There is one character's death that is so heartbreaking, that by the end of the book, all readers will have tears in their eyes. You will be shocked and constantly blown away throughout this novel, but most importantly, you will never want to say goodbye. So instead of goodbye, I shall say, see you later to these characters. This series will always have a special place in my heart, and will be re-read many, many times. I highly recommend this book to any fan of Ms. Dennard. You will not be disappointed. Happy reading )
I started this book because I just needed a series to fall back into when nothing else was grabbing me at the moment. After scanning my shelves, I thought it was finally time to finish the Something Strange and Deadly trilogy! The funny (or not-so-funny) thing is, after picking a book I was sure would grab me, I had nothing but struggles trying to get into STRANGE AND EVER AFTER.

I’ve been a fan of the trilogy from the start. SOMETHING STRANGE AND DEADLY was just a lot of fun and Susan Dennard is an absolutely sweetheart! I actually even enjoyed the second book, A DARKNESS STRANGE AND LOVELY, even more so my plans to finally hop into book three and wrap up the series had me really excited and feeling all kinds of warm fuzzies. It started off well and I was definitely interested in where we had left off (plus Oliver <333) but for whatever reason, I just could not get into the book. My interest started REALLY waning after the first few chapters and I just found myself struggling to focus.

Falling out of love with a series is hard, and I think that’s what happened here. The book wasn’t “bad” by any means but my interest in the series overall just seemed to… drift. It also makes my review that much harder to write because how can I feel SO differently now than I did when I first started the series? It seems unfair to say “it’s me, not you” with a series that I’ve already invested time in and spent time sharing… but either way, that seems to be the case here.

I did still like the magic aspect of the book but I felt like in STRANGE AND EVER AFTER, I just wasn’t AS interested. Did I not get enough answers? Enough explanation? Was I so unfocused that I totally missed those fine details on how the magic system worked? Whatever the true answer is (maybe yes to all of the above), it just didn’t seem as concrete as I had hoped. Oliver (the demon!) was one of my favorite characters from book two and honestly, if he wasn’t in this book, I would have had a very hard time continuing at all. I did struggle with the characters a bit in each book, but I still had that love there for the plot. Struggling with the pacing and seemingly similar battles versus the undead several times over just really made me feel like I was reading what I already read in the previous books and I didn’t quite feel that growth from the characters in this book like I had hoped either. There was character growth, but maybe not as much or not in the way that I was hoping. The worst part of it all is that I honestly cannot place my finger on why I didn’t enjoy this book as much as I thought I would except for the fact that… falling out of love with series happens.

There were still some things I enjoyed about STRANGE AND EVER AFTER but I just was not feeling it this time around. I wished we had gotten to see more of Egypt (and I was secretly hoping for more Egyptian mythology tie-ins). I wish I had seen even MORE from Eleanor. I wish someone hadn’t spoiled the ending for me on Twitter… But such is life and I can’t have all of the happy endings to series that I want! Sometimes these things just happen and really, I should have known this was a possibility. More than anything, I’m just really sad because Susan Dennard is SO amazing that by not liking this book, I almost feel like I’m letting her down. It’s a tricky thing when you start to interact with authors! I think I had many more personal feelings attached this time around so I really felt bad as I was reading.
Overall, I loved this series. Dennard's characters are compelling, the plot relentless, the moral quandaries interesting, the debates over them push the story forward instead of bogging it down.
