This is a thought-provoking book that retells the gospel from a modern point of view--a sort of what if type of story. Myers weaves the tale expertly, staying true to the biblical account. I found myself comparing Eli to the gospel of John, trying to decide which modern disciple played the part of which original one. Still, I didn't see the end coming! Great book. The narrator was also good. Very enjoyable.

Great re-telling of the Gospel stories in today's world. Thousands of years removed from the historical context of the Gospel's setting, Bill Myers does an excellent job getting modern American readers to relate to the political, religious, and sociological factors that existed in Jesus' days by drawing contemporary comparisons. A great read.
I have just finished this book and what a story, two sided but now times, Mr. Myers is a very good writer and I am sure a very good person as well, this is a simple story of what if from my point of view, it will make you cry and cheer as well as think, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and looking forward to reading "The God Hater" also by Mr. Myers, he has recommended this book to me and said that Quote- This is an important one" so there now you have it, stories by Mr. Myers are A+ reads.

Without telling to much about this book I have to say that I love, love, love the mental image Bill Myers put into my head. The miracles are portrayed in a different light but very effective in displaying the power of God. It's a must read for anyone!
I really enjoyed this twist on the Gospel story. I'm not sure that's the way things would have gone; however, it made for a lively and engaging story line anyway. I'm finding that Bill Meyer is one of the best writers in current Christian fiction books.
This is just a story, Bill Myers explains in the beginning. No one is saying that every detail matches the original entrance on earth of God's son. But Myers effectively shows how in our era the disciples Jesus/Eli chooses seem like the compadres of a bad person to the "church-y" eye. And that eye is exactly the one Jesus/Eli wanted to expose as being shifty. In "Eli," since Jesus had not come 2000 years previously, the mega churches were actually like synagogues, because Christianity didn't exist. That didn't stop the pastors from being just as mega church-y as they can be WITH Christianity. When Eli visited one such church, he threw down the merchandise displays just as Jesus did in the temple 2000 years ago. I think a lot of readers might understand the message better in the contemporary context.
Bill Myers does an excellent job telling the Gospel story as if it happened today. The books really brings to life the characters and unlike other books like the Shack, Myers actually stays True to Sound Doctrine. Very gripping tale of Justice and Mercy, and why "You're only as good as your word" isn't the whole story, that we should strive for perfection and rely upon grace.
I don't think I can do justice to this book in a review. Just think what if JESUS was born in our time. And then imagine thAt he goes through all the same things but differently because he is here. When he feeds the 5000 it is not with fish and bread because we don't have that at our gatherings how about hamburgers and fries. Think of all the parables in modern day. Where would the sermon on the mount be preached. Who would be for him and who would be against him. After you have imagined all that read the book and be prepared to be blown away. Bill Meyer did an amazing job of hitting all the important biblical teachings of Jesus in our day. A wonderful book.
